چکیده

In gaze controlled computer interfaces the dwell time is often used as selection criterion. But this solution comes along with several problems, especially in the temporal domain: Eye movement studies on scene perception could demonstrate that fixations of different durations serve different purposes and should therefore be differentiated. The use of dwell time for selection implies the need to distinguish intentional selections from merely perceptual processes, described as the Midas touch problem. Moreover, the feedback of the actual own eye position has not yet been addressed to systematic studies in the context of usability in gaze based computer interaction. We present research on the usability of a simple eye typing set up. Different dwell time and eye position feedback configurations were tested. Our results indicate that smoothing raw eye position and temporal delays in visual feedback enhance the system's functionality and usability. Best overall performance was obtained with a dwell time of 500 ms.

Command Without a Click: Dwell Time Typing by Mouse and Gaze Selections

With dwell time activation, completely hands free interaction may be achieved by tracking the user’s gaze positions. The first study presented compares typing by mouse click with dwell time typing on Danish onscreen keyboard with 10 large buttons which change according to character prediction. The second study compares mouse and eye-gaze dwell input on a similar Japanese keyboard, but without d...

Usability Evaluation of Dwell-free Eye Typing Techniques

Dwelling is an essential task to be performed to select keys from an on-screen keyboard present in the eye typing interface. This selection task can be performed by fixing eye gaze on a key for a prolonged time. Spending sufficient amount of time on each key effectively decreases the overall eye typing rate. To address the problem, researchers proposed mechanisms, which diminish the dwell time....

EEG-based communication and control: speed-accuracy relationships.

People can learn to control mu (8-12 Hz) or beta (18-25 Hz) rhythm amplitude in the EEG recorded over sensorimotor cortex and use it to move a cursor to a target on a video screen. In our current EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system, cursor movement is a linear function of mu or beta rhythm amplitude. In order to maximize the participant's control over the direction of cursor movemen...

The Effect of Various Parameters on Out-of-phase Thermo-mechanical Fatigue Lifetime of A356.0 Cast Aluminum Alloy

In this paper, the effect of various parameters on out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue (OP-TMF) lifetime of A356.0 cast aluminum alloy is investigated. The studied parameters include maximum temperature, dwell time, and the thermo-mechanical loading factor. OP-TMF tests are conducted considering realistic running conditions of diesel engine cylinder heads. The maximum temperature varies betw...

Typing with Gaze: An Interaction Design Perspective

In this position paper, we discuss some early in-house experiments in designing eye gaze input systems for text entry. We have focused primarily on improving the interface’s feedback for dwell time and selection, using both sound and visual feedback. While carrying out these design experiments, we have become interested in the potential of factors such as Read Text Events (RTE). While these are...
